Viola Davis and Sharing the Spotlight on Social Media

Actress Viola Davis made history last night becoming the first Black woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Drama series. In her acceptance speech, she emphasized the need for diversity in Hollywood, and how often there aren’t enough roles for Black women for them to even be in a position to win an Emmy as she did. But what I loved most was the time she took in her few moments on stage to lift up other Black women doing big things in the film and TV industry:

So here’s to all the writers, the awesome people that are Ben Sherwood, Paul Lee, Peter Nowalk, Shonda Rhimes, people who have redefined what it means to be beautiful, to be sexy, to be a leading woman, to be black.

And to the Taraji P. Hensons, the Kerry Washingtons, the Halle Berrys, the Nicole Beharies, the Meagan Goods, to Gabrielle Union: Thank you for taking us over that line.

We often talk about social media strategy and content creation as a way to toot our own horns and become a broadcaster for our  company or organization. But what about the importance of lifting others up and cheering them on when they do good work that resonates with us and our brand?

Promoting ourselves is important for sure, but it’s always important to remember the partners and friends of our company/organization/brand that stand with us in our work–and to always be a little bit like Viola and maybe a little like Taraji too.

If you are only using your social media channels to promote yourself, you’re doing it wrong. Leave some room to lift others up and share the spotlight.
